Reading Ⅰ, Ⅱ
In this class we focus on reading skills and vocabulary development. We look at how English words are made and how to find the meaning of paragraphs and sentences. We also read “Graded Readers”, which as are books that students read for fun. These books help you improve your reading, grammar and vocabulary so you’ll do better on the TOEIC test. Students get to decide which books they want to read from our Global Plaza and library.

Student autonomy
I think it is important for students to be able to decide their goals and how they want to study. I try and help students think about what they should do to improve their English. Things like “Graded Reading” helps students develop autonomy because students decide the level of the book and which books the want to read. To achieve goals, students should be the ones who decide their goals and how they will meet them. My research has looked at how teachers can help students set goals and how we can support you in achieving them.
Column
English is the most commonly used language in the world. It’s so common that there are more non-native English speakers than native English speakers. English opens many doors and possibilities for your future. It will help you find a job, help you to communicate with people when you travel, or even here in Japan. Learning a language takes time and is a long process but the outcomes are immeasurable and the rewards are abundant.
I believe that we are all connected, regardless of where we live and what we do. What happens on the other side of the world, in countries we’ve never been to, people we’ve never met, does have an impact on all of us. It’s important that people are aware of their environment, current events and the feelings of others. It is important that we take time and reflect on how we can better the world for all of us. Be kind, be thoughtful, and look at how you can help others when you need help the most.
