PICK UP! 授業

Discussion

Everyone in my Discussion class does a lot of speaking, except for me! I try to say as little as possible. We learn specific skills to aid discussion, such as expressing an opinion, agreeing and disagreeing politely, and asking follow-up questions. In the second-year course, students watch recent videos on YouTube and prepare to discuss the issues in the classroom. My goal is to help students to become expert users of the English language while enjoying sharing their ideas.

Language, culture, and the Bible

Recently, I have been researching how the Bible has influenced language and culture all over the world. Many of the expressions and idioms that we have in English come from stories in the Bible. For example, “Don’t throw your pearls before pigs.” (Matthew 7:6). Pop culture also draws upon ideas and characters found in the Bible story. Harry Potter can be seen as a kind of Jesus figure, and the character of Superman is based on Moses. In the political world, ideas from the Bible have shaped our understanding of human rights, equality, social justice, conservation and education. It’s truly an amazing book.

I started studying Japanese when I was in high school, because I thought that Japan was so cool. I loved ninjas and sushi and manga and Japanese pop culture. I did a homestay in Tokyo for 2 months, and it was a wonderful experience for me. It was so exciting to actually use the language I learned in school, and to communicate with people in Japanese. Even now, I am still studying Japanese. Recently I’ve been using a flashcard app on my iPhone to learn kanji. I really recommend flashcard apps as a good way to study. Now I know about 2000 kanji.

ワタシとセカイ

I was born in Australia, and I grew up in Melbourne. Melbourne is the most liveable city in the world, because it has so many parks, a beautiful beach, fashionable cafes and lots of art and culture. When I was 18 years old, I went backpacking through Asia and Europe, and visited about 20 countries. It was a wonderful experience. Backpacking is a great way to learn about yourself, as well as experience different cultures and different ways of thinking. I encourage all university students to travel and see the world. After you graduate from university and get a job, you probably won’t have a chance to go travelling for a long time. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by.

Language is perhaps the most exciting subject that anyone can study. Language is the tool used by humans to share ideas and exchange opinions. When you have a deep knowledge of language and can use it skillfully, you can access a world of ideas and join in conversations with the greatest minds in history. Watching a Hollywood movie or listening to your favorite pop song in the original language is far more satisfying than reading a Japanese translation. When you learn to use a foreign language, you teach your mind to look at the world in a different way. Personally, I have studied Japanese, Latin and Greek, and these languages have revealed whole new worlds to me. I hope that you too can experience the excitement of language study here at Meijo University.
