A cross-cultural exchange program with Sri Lankan students of LNBTI (Lanka Nippon BizTech Institute) was conducted in English by six Meijo university students (Hijiri Katagiri, Kazumi Takahashi, Mizuki Nakamura, Akira Yamada, Mei Watanabe, Masashi Oguchi) from February 11 to May 3, 2021. This program was supported by an honorary professor of our faculty, Dr. Ananda Kumara, and in total, students met seven times online. The purpose of this program was to interact with Sri Lankan students of similar age and to promote Japanese culture.

We thought this online exchange program would encourage students to understand cross-culture and own-culture alike. Owing to the influence of COVID-19 which has impacted students’ ability to study abroad, we conducted it using Zoom. In the Zoom sessions, we introduced Japanese culture and discussed the differences between Japan and Sri Lanka for approximately two hours each time. Additionally, to reduce the challenges caused by disabled cameras and muted voices in a fairly poor communication environment, we introduced the Zoom chatbox and whiteboard to also communicate visually. Such real-time technology functioned well for the purposes of our program. Although we all used English to communicate, there was some difficulty at times understanding each other because of the differences in pronunciation between Japanese and Sri Lankan English. Overcoming these language barriers contributed to building the sense of friendship and involvement we enjoyed through communicating online.

Through this experience, we have learned that there are a variety of possibilities to expand our activities to connect with foreign students. We hope that more students will have the online cross-cultural exchange experience.

“I think it is very interesting to receive a presentation from a Japanese student, and it made my determination stronger to go to Japan one day.”

“It’s very valuable and interesting session to me today. And thank you very much for this information. I would like to study Japanese language with Japanese students.

“This session is so amazing... I like to join this kind of a session in near future...”
